You can’t cut corners when it comes to patient care, but you can closely examine how you group your tasks and in what order you perform them. Constantly think about how you can reorder you work to work more efficiently. You can also be proactive. For instance, make regular rounds to all of your patients’ rooms to see if they need anything, rather than waiting for a call bell to ring (which might interrupt you while performing another task). Learn to walk faster and avoid engaging in unnecessary conversation with coworkers. Come to work a few minutes early each day so you can get settled in and drink a cup of coffee before the shift starts – this will help you feel much more in control of the day.

The most efficient and well-liked phlebotomist I have supervisied shared with me his “secrets of success”. Instead of hanging around the lab at night waiting for stat requests to come down (this was before a computer system was in use) and then going up to the floors one by one, he simply made hourly rounds to all of the nursing units. The nurses knew to expect him so they held all lab requests and gave them to him when he showed up each hour.

Developing good and efficient work habits will make you stand out as an employee. Once you’ve mastered efficiency, you’ll be in a position to help others do the same. Good luck to you.
