According to imdb, he’s a German Shepherd.
When I first saw the preview I assumed he was a White German Shepherd…
I hadn’t even heard about that movie yet, but I looked on imdb.com, and it says that Bolt is a German Shepherd. So, to answer your question, he is a white German Shepherd. Those ears certainly indicate German Shepherd…

Bolt is a Belgian Malinois. It is an off breed from the German Shepherd, which is why Disney made that mistake. They do not grow to be as tall as the German Shepherd, which Bolt is clearly not.
I don’t know but he looks like an American Eskimo dog.

He looks a lot like a Japanese Shiba Inu. The Creme Colored One. He’s small enough. Shiba’s are known to be medium sized dogs. Only difference between him and a Shiba is he has a straight tail, Shiba’s are usually curly.

he is a white husky because the make him run so much, trust me i know my dog breeds i have been studying them for my whole live. A german shepherd just don’t have that much stamina like the husky, Plus you see another german shepherd in the movie witch is much bigger than him. A german shepherd dog is bigger than a husky, there is no dought about it he is a solid white siberian husky.
I mean think about it really hard is it possible for him to have that much stamina if he were not a husky I disagree with all of you. I don’t even think disney knows of a swiss shepherd, and for some reason i know more people that have herd of a husky, and never heven heard of a german shepherd. like I said i disagree with all of you, and i am not saying diney is not smart, i know they are you have to be smart to work a computer. I just say listen to the laws of dog fisics.
Think about where bolt was adopted, think about what breed he would be, given the clues from the movie, but he does look like a white german shepard, although a white german shepard is too large to be bolt.
Maybe disney gave bolt a smaller appearance of a white german shepard in the movie?……..maybe not? Because the stance, the tail, the pointy ears, the body structure, all of these things count towards bolt being in fact, a white german shepard, the only thing that doesnt, is the size, but bolt is DEFINATELY NOT A WESTIE!

The only thing that wouldnt match in the comparison from bolt to a siberian husky would be the eyes and eye color.

I believe he is a white german shepherd. People keep bringing up the point of “he is too small…” but honestly, it’s an animated movie. Has no one noticed his massively disproportionate nose and head? Which breed does that belong to?
As for physics, I don’t think the running proves he is a husky – I’m sure a cat wouldn’t fair well after having her head smashed into a mailbox, nor would a hamster be able to keep up with cars on the interstate.
Ya know, if you’ve seen the movie, they get him a a shelter. He’s probably a Mutt. A Mix of White German Shepard and possibly husky or american eskimo. Bolt seems way too small to be a shepard. Besides, Mutts are the best. You get all the best traits. I’ve had a Bassett/LabX, not too stubborn, short like a bassett, but looked like a fox red lab. I currently have a BeagleX. He is almost 50 lbs, is black/tan with a white chest patch, and is about 18″, but he is all beagle in behavior and attitude.

I would like to know why you people want to know what bolts breed is. For me, i have a tremendous love for dogs, and as soon as i saw the movie i said to myself “i want that dog” so i am planning on adopting an american white shepherd and training it to do similar tricks as bolt in the movie, i will raise him with the best care and nutrition as possible and probably get someone to paint the lightning bolt symbol on his left side just like in the movie. I also plan on getting the exact same toys and bed that bolt has in the movie and of course his name is going to be Bolt…and thats about it!

ESKIE OBVIOUS Too Short in comparison to the scale of everything in the movie especially the cats for a 5 year old Shepard and no cream color anywhere and nothing about him is Westie but the color Unless a Westie on Steroids with a stretched out blown up snout and the whiskers and all cut off for filming Ha Ha

LOL! Listen to all of you. First of all, I agree that it could be a White German Shepherd, considering the fact that it is a movie and they can choose any size of animation they want. However its definitely not a Shiba Inu, because they have a way thicker coat. Its not a Westie either, they are considered a smaller breed and the dog in the movie would be considered a medium dog. Basenji’s and Shiba Inu’s are relatively the right size of dog to the dog in the movie Bolt. Who cares what kind of dog he is, find the dog you want to own and get that dog.
Where are you guys getting Belgian Shepherd/Malinois from? They do not come in white, nor do they have large ears. The closest colour they come in is grey sable… And that always has a black mask. He also has a very pronounced stop (forehead) exaggerated by the cartoonists. Blegians ave a very gradual stop.
Westie? I’m not even sure where this idea came from. He is not a small dog, he is a medium dog… And does not resemble a Westie in any way except being white. He doesn’t have the right coat type for starters! Westies have curly fur. Or at least, not fur that’s as straight as Bolt’s.
American Eskimo dogs have long fur, much longer than Bolt’s (even if he was blowing coat), and are the wrong shape for Bolt. Bolt is more rectangular, AED are squarer in build. Also, AED have a spitz tail. Bolt has a sickle tail.
I do not think he is a Shiba either. He doesn’t look anything like one to me… Wrong earset (not rounded, too big), no spitz tail (curled over back) and also, he has a black nose. Cream Shibas with a black nose… Genetically impossible. Bolt is also not foxy in appearance.
I personally think it’s obvious he is either a German Shepherds mix (this includes White Swiss Shepherds and American White Shepherds, because they are pretty much the same thing) or just a short GSD. I think this because;
1- Large ears. Characteristic of the breed.
2- GSDs are a popular, recognisible breed.
3- Whenever he is seen standing, he always has a slight slope to his back. (GSD stack)
4- IMDB describes him as being a GSD, which is the most official conformation we’ve got to go on.
His anatomy just screams GSD to me… Just exaggerated, like anamators do. His back is sloped, not straight like a husky, shiba or westie. And when he does his Superbark, he’s pretty much in a GSD stack and it’s even more apparant of his vast similarities to a GSD. He appears to be a caricature of a White German Shepherd.
I’m quite suprised, actually., with the ammount of people that think he’s a different breed than what I presumed was painfully obvious!

I agree with stephanie and charlotte. i think youre all taking this too seriously. Talie.. yes huskys can run further, but its a film. as stephanie points out a hamster cannot keep up with a lorry either. look at his body shape. the withers are much lower than his shoulders, and he is as long as he is tall. that is the breed standard for a german shepherd. Disney arent stupid, if they can animate a film they can decide on a breed. they havent got it wrong. hes clearly a white german shepherd. the proportion to the cat is wrong yes but thats the point of an animateed film, you can control everything. would it be as fun if everything looked like real life? no. And shame on those who think hes a westie.
oh and a samoyed? how can you say that? his tail looks like a german shepherds. they have fluffy tails. how can you ignore the most important feature of a samoyed, their coat, how is his coat like a samoyeds?
I think it would be wise for the public, including myself, to just trust disney and the imdb. disney are not stupid. if they say hes a german shepherd, hes a german shepherd.

According to a website I was previously on, it stated that Bolt is based off of the American White Sheperd. Which is the same thing as a white german sheperd, except they have become their own breed. They look almost exactly like a german sheperd except for coat color. It is a direct descendant of the german sheperd dog. Although Bolt resembles a corgi, he is in fact a White Sheperd. Plus its a cartoon. In a lot of cartoons the bodies of the characters a mishapen. IMDB is correct although he is not a german sheperd, but a White German Sheperd. Very, very, very close to a German Sheperd.

Bolt is too small to be a White German Shephard, but then again, are animations always the same size? Like, look at ‘Finding Nemo’. The fish are way bigger than they should be. The Clown Fish isn’t very big in reality, in the movie it is.
