if u cant do it take him to the vet it will cost about £10.00 and they will do it whether he bites or not they wont leave him in pain
If you are having problems doing it yourself then take him to the vet and have them do it.
They will have to muzzle him and hold him down and trim the nails.
Isn’t it sad when an owner cannot even cut the nails of their little tiny dog!!!!!!!!
Who cares if the dog doesn’t WANT you to trim them!!!!! You TRIM THEN ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!
Remember who is the human and who is the dog.
Our chihuahua is the same way! you need two people really…one to trim and one to hold the dog
try a vet. or get a mussle and then do it.
and after give him a treat..
My mom had difficulty trimming our dogs nails. If its a puppy you might want to take it to the groomers because it could be more difficult to deal with when its young and chews more. At least take it once to the groomers and then maybe it will get used to getting its nails trimmed.
My dogs hate it, but I bought an electric filing thing that just files their nails. They still hate it but it is a lot easier than trimming and they don’t bleed when I do it. Try handling his paws without cutting his nails as often as possible as well, and praise him whenever he lets you. This will help him get used to you touching them and will be easier to handle when it comes time to cut or file.
They make a muzzle for that size dog, some doges are afraid of the click sound that happens and some don`t like their feet touched. Try to get her calm and practice by rubbing her feet all the time so she gets used to you touching them.
Use either a muzzle or an elizibethan collar, so he can’t bite you, and clip away.
First off, you need to tell him that your hand does NOT belong in his mouth. Be serious, be firm and give him that look. My mom’s chi tried that crap on me when I was helping her trim his nails, I told him quite firmly, and that he’d better let go. He let go, and ducked his head down for the rest of the trimming.
You need to do this as often as possible, considering the growth rate of his nails, so he’ll get used to it. Just holding him and handling his ticklish little toes every day will help as well.
To make the experience less tramatic for him, don’t use those guillitine clippers, get the ones that cut side to side, or just use people toe nail clippers and again, clip them side to side, not up and down, this decreases the amount of pressure and discomfort that he’ll feel while you trim those nails.
Good luck with this ever so “fun” task. Whatever you do, don’t let him get away with such naughty behavior. You are in charge!
I had a rescued, older dachshund that was terrified of the nail clippers, and didn’t even like me to touch her feet. Finally I got a well-fitting muzzle, put it on, and told her calmly that we were going to cut her nails. I did it very slowly and carefully – it’s hard to cut the black nails because you can’t see where the blood starts – and then took the muzzle off. She wasn’t so scared after that, and seemed to appreciate being able to walk better, they were so long they were curling under!
When she’s in my lap, i gently stroke her feet and nails, she lets me do it now. But I’ll still use the muzzle next time, no point in getting bitten.
My dog hates it too. Fortunately, she is greedy and I give her one treat for the first nail, two treats for the second, three for the third, and so on. Gradually I’ve been reducing the number of treats and she has accepted it.
I have had a dog for a pet. The dog’s nails were never trimmed and they were fine. The nails trimmed naturally by walking around. Let your dog be happy and take it for a jog, don’t worry about the nails getting long.
What do you think dogs did before there were pet groomers?
Walking your dog on sidewalks and cement (or Macadam) will help keep his nails shorter.
You need to condition the dog to having his feet handled. When he is calm and you are petting him just gently run your hand down his leg and briefly handle his paw (like holding hands) you might even give him a treat when you do so that he associates having his paws touched as a good thing.
Do this with all his paws and try to slowly get him comfortable with the idea of you clipping his nails. Be very careful not to trim too deeply as to cut into the quick. Stay well short of the dark area of the nail.
You might also ask them to do it at vet’s office when you take your dog in for his regular check-up ( you do take him don’t you?) they will usually do it as a courtousy .
A little time and a lot of patience and you should be fine.
good luck.
Do yourself (and your fingers) a favor and take him to the vet and have them do it. Our vet only charges $10.
